Difficult to Disconnect

Posted on January 20, 2009

Dr. José Szapocznik recognizes that research is not a 9-5 job, but a strong team can make the workload easier.

I don't balance all of it very well in the sense that I wind up working Saturdays and weekends and Sundays, and so there is a lot of work. I'm very good at taking vacations. If I take a vacation, I can disconnect. But as long as I'm home, it's difficult to disconnect.

But I think what's critical is that I have some great faculty members and also a great Assistant Chair who's an administrator that can take huge pieces of work and get it done because I couldn't do everything that I do by myself. So it's really about having a terrific team of very smart, very capable people with a lot of excitement and a lot of energy for the work they do.
